In 1996, a group of master distillers and spirits professionals gathered for a summit to reflect on early American whiskey-making, quietly laying the groundwork for a future release. Nearly three decades later, Buffalo Trace introduces Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Distiller’s Council, a $1,500 bottled-in-bond bourbon made using 19th-century techniques. Presented in a Grecian-style decanter inspired by 1950s Old Taylor bottles, this limited bourbon revives Taylor’s original sour mashing process and honors his impact on modern distillation.
A new, ultra-limited whiskey joins the renowned E.H. Taylor, Jr. lineup. Dubbed Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Distiller’s Council, this Kentucky straight bourbon honors historic American whiskey-making techniques, including those popularized by Taylor himself.
The bourbon’s genesis dates back to a 1996 meeting dubbed the “Distiller’s Council.” At what is now Buffalo Trace, experts including Elmer T. Lee, Orville Schupp, Gary Gayheart, Mark Brown, and Harlen Wheatley gathered to exchange notes from bygone eras of whiskey production. After tasting more than 30 samples of different ages and recipes, the veteran group set out to resurrect techniques from the beginning of their respective careers (and even long before).
The result is Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Distiller’s Council, which according to the brand is made “using equipment and based on techniques originally invented by Taylor himself.” The new bottling — the 14th in the modern E.H. Taylor, Jr. line of whiskeys — is bottled-in-bond, meaning all components come from a single distillation season, and the final product is proofed to 50% ABV (100 proof).
