Bacardi is a famous brand of rum, founded in Cuba and now based in Puerto Rico. It is most famous for its white rum but makes a range of different expressions of aged and flavored rums and premixed drinks. Today, the Bacardi company owns a number of notable spirits brands, including Grey Goose vodka, Dewar's whisky and Bombay Sapphire gin.
The brand was founded in 1862 when Catalan-born wine merchant Facundo Bacardi Massó and his brother José set up a distillery in Santiago de Cuba. Facundo had previously pioneered charcoal filtration, along with aging in white oak barrels, which allowed him to produce what is generally considered the first white rum. Fruit bats lived in the rafters of the distillery, inspiring the company's logo.
Bacardi began to expand internationally in the 1910s, finding markets outside of central America. However, the rise of Fidel Castro in the 1950s proved challenging for the company, leaving Cuba in 1960 after its assets were confiscated. Happily, Bacardi had already transferred many of its assets, trademarks and formulas to the Bahamas before the revolution, and had already built plants in Mexico and Puerto Rico to reduce taxes on export to the USA.
